Warriors topple Cardinals, 47-43

COLUMBUS — Lakeside Lutheran’s girls basketball team won its Capitol North opener 47-43 over host Columbus on Thursday.

The Warriors (7-2, 1-0 in conference) led by five at the break, giving up 17 first-half points, in a game that had 40 fouls called.

“This was quite the battle. At two minutes left, they pulled within one at 41-40,” Lakeside Lutheran girls basketball coach Tim Matthies said. “At that point, it’s anyone’s game. We got four really big stops, they had four challenged looks at the three. We pulled down four tough defensive rebounds. We made 4-of-6 at the free throw line, we had some ladies who stepped up and made plays when we needed to.”

Junior guard Morgan Slonaker had a team-high nine points for Lakeside, which has won five straight games. Maya Heckmann made two of the team’s four 3-pointers, finishing with six. Lauren Thiele and Kaylee Raymond also each scored six while Olyvia Uecker, Marin Riesen and Mia Murray all registered five.

Uecker and Raymond each hit a free throw late in the game and Thiele was 2-for-2 at the line. Slonaker had a breakaway layup as the Warriors won a gritty contest.

“The girls really played with a lot of heart. In particular tonight, Kaylee Raymond really stepped up. She had 11 rebounds, it was probably her best game,” Matthies said.

For Columbus (5-5, 0-1), Taylor Zittel scored 11 points and Amy Theilen contributed seven.

Lakeside was 17-for-28 from the foul line and Columbus went 6-for-15.

The Warriors play at Kettle Moraine Lutheran on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. for a nonconference game.
