Lakeside Lutheran’s volleyball team clinched at least a share of the Capitol North title with a 25-14, 18-25, 25-14, 25-21 victory against host Luther Prep on Tuesday.
Senior outside hitter Ella Collins had a team-high 19 kills to lead the Warrior offense. Junior outside hitter Payton Kuepers totaled 14 kills.
"We have been working really hard on starting strong and tonight we did that," Lakeside Lutheran volleyball coach Jenny Krauklis said. "That was a huge accomplishment for us as we get closer to the postseason. The second set, we started to slow down a little bit.
"Volleyball is a game that really depends on the serve/pass game. Luther Prep definitely did a better job than us in that second set with that aspect. I was proud that we were able to gain our composure and come back for the next set strong again."
Senior setter Karli Johnson and junior defensive specialist Kylee Gnabasik each had four aces for Lakeside (30-6, 8-0 in conference).
Johnson also led the Warriors with 46 assists while Gnabasik posted 22 digs. Kuepers had 2.5 blocks while sophomore middle Ella DeNoyer and junior middle Sydney Langille both had two blocks.
For Luther Prep (17-13, 3-5), junior hitter Lauren Paulsen had a team-high 12 kills. Junior setter Grace Kieselhorst led the team with four aces, 14 digs and 15 assists. Sophomore setter Andrea Bortulin had two blocks while senior middle Abby Winkel had 1.5 blocked shots. Andrea Bortulin had 14 assists and senior libero Naomi Bridgeman contributed 13 digs.
“In the first game, our serve receive was struggling and therefore we didn’t get any offensive opportunities,” Luther Prep volleyball coach Erin Nottling said. “I was proud of the girls for turning it around in game 2 and coming out strong. Lakeside has a great block and a strong defense and we kept trying to change it up all night. We had some big plays tonight and I am proud of how the girls fought to the end of each game.”
Luther Prep hosts Columbus on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.
