DEFOREST — Maggie Trautsch banked a 3-pointer high off the glass with 3.2 seconds remaining to lift eighth-ranked DeForest to a 50-49 nonconference win over Watertown on Tuesday.
Watertown (1-1) nearly had four players in double figures. Junior forward Teya Maas led the Goslings with 13 points, while junior guard Aubrey Schmutzler added 11 and sophomore guard Lily Gifford added 10. Sophomore forward Riley Quinn contributed nine points.
“We were amazed how hard and tough we played tonight,” Watertown girls basketball coach Matt Stollberg said. “We were missing some kids and only had nine players, but all of them contributed. We had a handful of girls (Maas, Gifford and Quinn) who never came out. We were up two with seven seconds left and nearly blocked (the winning shot). We defended it very well. When a crazy shot goes in, there’s nothing you can do. We couldn’t have asked for anything more from our girls tonight.”
The Goslings led 26-20 at halftime.
“We were able to handle DeForest’s fullcourt press and constant trapping very well throughout the game,” Stollberg said. “Aubrey and Lily did a great job running the point, and Autumn and Sydney were very solid in the guard position as well. Teya was huge for us throughout the entire game, leading in scoring, but also rebounding very well and being a constant outlet to pass to during pressure.
“Riley Quinn played the entire game along with Teya and Lily. Riley was very tough defensively, as well as hitting two game-tying free throws, and go-ahead jumper with a minute left. DeForest inbounded underneath with seven seconds to go, we defended very well and contested a deep 3-pointer that banked high off the glass for Trautsch. Our team is quite inexperienced, but they played with great poise and have improved immensely over the first several weeks.”
Watertown plays at Brookfield East on Tuesday.
