NEW BERLIN — Luther Prep's volleyball team finished in the top half of Saturday's 16-team New Berlin West Invitational after going 2-1 in pool play.
The Phoenix swept Nathan Hale/West Allis 25-9, 25-11 before a 3-set victory over New Berlin West.
DeForest beat LPS 25-11, 25-15 in the last match of pool play.
In the silver bracket, Luther Prep fell 25-15, 23-25, 14-16 to Appleton East as the team came home with a top-8 showing.
"We were pretty happy to finish in the top half of this competitive tournament," Luther Prep volleyball coach Erin Nottling said. "We started the day with two wins and then dropped to a tough DeForest (team) in pool play. Our bracket play game was close and we made some mistakes in the 3rd game that we could not recover from. I was overall very pleased with our whole team's performance today."
Junior setter Grace Kieselhorst led the team with 21 kills and 34 assists and was second in aces with five.
Junior hitter Lauren Paulsen totaled 35 digs while sophomore setter Andrea Bortulin registered seven aces for the Phoenix (4-8).
Senior middle hitter Abby Winkel had four blocks and freshman middle hitter Sam Fisch also had five aces.
"Grace and Andrea did a great job of leading our team today," Nottling said. "They were doing it all, offense and defense. This was a good gut check for us and showed us we can compete with tough teams."
Luther Prep returns to conference play on Tuesday at Columbus starting at 6:45 p.m.
