Phoenix edged by Blue Devils

Lodi junior guard Trey Traeder hit the game-winning shot with 11 seconds left, a corner 3-pointer with the score knotted at 48, as the Blue Devils edged the Luther Prep boys basketball team 51-48 in a Capitol North game at LPS on Thursday.

The Phoenix (4-13, 0-7) saw a 2-game win streak halted, rallying back from down 12 points to lead by six with two minutes remaining in the game.

Senior guard Paul Frick scored 14 points, making four second-half 3-pointers, and senior guard Nate de Galley tallied 12. Sophomore forward Marcus Fitzsimmons chipped in nine and senior forward Cole Burow finished with seven.

“In the first half, we couldn’t buy a bucket. Five minutes into the game it was 2-2,” Luther Prep boys basketball coach Nate Kieselhorst said. “Both teams were playing good defense. Told the guys at halftime to continue being confident with your shot. I thought we did an outstanding job on defense. (Lodi) is averaging over 60 a game, (defense) kept us in the game. Things clicked for us and shots started dropping.

“There was some momentum shifts at the end, our guys didn’t give up. They have taken their lumps with not scoring a lot, but their effort is always there and shows every time. We almost pulled it out.”

On the game-winner, senior guard Jack Persike drove the lane before Frick and de Galley converged, forcing a kick to Traeder who was spotted up beyond the arc. Luther Prep called timeout after advancing the ball past midcourt, setting up a play for Frick to get the game-tying look. Frick came off a ball screen and saw his 3-pointer hit front iron as the buzzer sounded.

“From a scoring perspective, I was happy with him. He was doing a nice job of distributing the ball and finding open guys as well,” Kieselhorst said of Frick. “Defensively, I thought we did a nice job of containing them, holding them in check so we could stay within striking distance. We are playing well the last three of four games. Things are starting to click so hopefully that will continue down the stretch and into the playoffs.”

Luther Prep plays at Poynette today at 7:30 p.m. in conference play.
