Lake Mills junior quarterback Adam Moen was named Offensive Player of the Year in Capitol Conference North Division all-conference voting held recently.

Moen eclipsed the state record for most combined passing and rushing yards with 4,477. He threw for 3,517 yards and 39 touchdowns and ran for 960 yards, scoring 21 times on the ground. His 60 combined touchdowns are thought to be second-most in state history behind Cedar Grove-Belgium’s Josh Weiss’s 65 in 2016.

Joining Moen on the first team were L-Cat senior receivers Hunter Buechel and Matt Johnson and senior offensive lineman David Klein. Defensively for the L-Cats, Buechel (DB), Charlie Cassady (junior, ILB), Grant Horkan (junior, OLB), Josh Lescohier (junior, DL), Tyler Theder (junior, DE), Brayden Ciesiolka (sophomore, K) and Johnson (specialist) were named to the first team.

Buechel had 1,222 receiving yards, scoring 11 times. Johnson totaled 1,108 yards and also had 11 touchdowns. Cassady notched a team-high 90 tackles and Buechel made 73 stops. Horkan and Lescohier each had four sacks. Theder made 62 tackles and Johnson averaged 21.5 yards per kickoff return. Ciesiolka was 47-for-52 on extra point attempts.

Lakeside Lutheran placed four players on the first team, including junior offensive lineman Will Jorgensen, junior outside linebacker Nathan Chesterman, senior inside linebacker Logan Pampel and junior kicker Tersony Vater.

Pampel led the team in tackles with 99 and had a team-high in tackles for loss (10). Chesterman made 87 stops and had two interceptions. Vater was 30-for-32 on extra point attempts.

Luther Prep had four players on the first team list, including Nathan de Galley who received honors at wide receiver and defensive back. He was joined by Jackson Lindemann (senior, OL), Christian Koelpin (senior, DE) and Caleb Chmielewski (junior, DL).

Nathan de Galley caught 27 passes for 430 yards, scoring four times. He also ran it six times for 46 yards.

“He was a guy teams had to account for, they had to double team him and know where he was,” Luther Prep football coach Justin Gregorius said. “They knew who he was and that they had to defend him. He led the team in tackles. He played free safety, came up and was a good athlete back there and could come up and play the pass.”

Lindemann showed the ability to lineup at tackle and guard.

“He was second team last year and played tackle and guard,” Gregorius said.

“Jackson isn’t going to overpower anyone and does well in space pulling. He played multiple positions for us depending on injuries and game situations.”

Koelpin and Chmielewski helped anchor the defensive line.

“Christian was a quiet leader for us. He held the edge very well on the defensive side,” Gregorius said of Koelpin. “He was one of our better defensive linemen, if not best defensive linemen, he really improved this year.”

“Caleb played the interior as our nose and he could really hold the point of attack well,” Gregorius said of Chmielewski.

“For being a big guy, pushing 340 pounds, Caleb pursued to the ball really well. He held the point of attack.”

Lake Mills had three players on the second team in Michael Stenbroten (sophomore, specialist), Lescohier (OL) and Johnson (DB).

Stenbroten averaged 16.2 yards per punt return and Johnson made 43 stops.

The Warriors had four players named to the second team in Matt Davis (senior, QB), Ben Buxa (freshman, OL) Carter Schneider (senior, WR) and Vater (DB and WR).

Davis threw for 1,475 yards, completing 56.4 percent of his throws, and had 14 touchdowns. Davis also had a team-high 704 rushing yards, scoring 11 times on the ground. Schneider led the team in receiving yards with 519 and scored four touchdowns. Vater had 466 yards, scoring five times, and made 62 tackles from his defensive back spot.

Junior running back Jon Holtz, who rushed for 728 yards, was on the second team for the Phoenix. He was joined by Brett Wieting (sophomore, OLB), David Baumann (junior, ILB) and Yuri Soloviyov (junior, P).

Holtz missed a little time in league action but still did enough to garner recognition.

“When he was in there, teams had to key on him and he was a definitely threat,” Gregorius said. “That’s a tribute to Jon only playing in 3.5 conference games, proud of him for what he’s done. It would be neat to see him healthy all year.”

Wieting and Baumann both had solid seasons at linebacker.

“Brett is a pesky guy and a good athlete who made some good plays at outside linebacker,” Gregorius said of Wieting. “He was versatile, we put him at corner for a few games. He did a good job running plays down in pass coverage for us.”

“I’m happy for David, he’s a hard-working guy. He’s in on lots of plays,” Gregorius said of Baumann. “When we’d watch film, David was in on lots of plays and would make things happen. He didn’t have lots of solo tackles or tackles for losses, he was consistently in on the play and on piles.”

Soloviyov had a couple of poor punts in league play but still averaged 32 yards per kick in conference play, averaging 36 for the season.

“His average just wasn’t up there with the Lodi guy who was averaging in the 40s,” Gregorius said of Lodi first team punter Zack Dolson.

Lake Mills had two players garner honorable mention honors in Jaxson Retrum (junior, WR) and Ben Buchholtz (freshman, ILB).

On the honorable mention list for Lakeside were John O’Donnell (junior, TE) and Micah Cody (junior, OLB).

Luther Prep’s honorable mention players were Jonathan Wiedenhoeft (junior, OL), Atticus Lawrenz (junior, DB), Levi Clark (senior, DE) and Paul Frick (senior, specialist).

Lake Mills won the Capitol North with a 5-0 record followed by Lakeside Lutheran and Columbus each at 3-2, Lodi and Luther Prep each at 2-3 and Poynette at 0-5.
