It took a whole lot longer than everybody wanted, but victory is always worth the wait.
Senior forward Desi Smith’s unassisted goal in the 84th minute gave Watertown’s girls soccer team a 3-2 overtime victory over West Bend West Tuesday at Landsverk Field.
Watertown (6-1-1, 2-0 in the Wisconsin Little Ten Conference) celebrated Parents’ Night in their home opener and dominated West Bend West (1-6, 0-2) with an 18-6 edge in shots on goal.
The Goslings took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Smith sent a hard cross into the middle, where Jamie Sueflohn won the ball in a scramble and finished it.
West Bend West managed just two first half shots on goal but scored each time to take a 2-1 lead. Sophomore midfielder Emille Clavette took a through ball up the middle and beat Watertown keeper Carlee Schuhmacher’s challenge with a near post shot to the upper 90 in the 17th minute.
“We weren’t marking as tight as we should have been and she got through,” Watertown girls soccer coach Jen Cashin said.
Just over three minutes later, the Spartans earned a free kick and freshman midfielder Melissa Rinn collected the ball on the right side of the box and beat Schuhmacher to the far post.
Smith responded with her second assist of the match, this time springing senior forward Sarah Meylor down the middle, where she beat keeper Breanna Greefkes with a shot to the right side of the net in the 30th minute to tie it at 2-2.
That’s how things remained until overtime, when Smith carried it across middle past a couple of defenders and shot to the keeper’s far post.
“We set the tone at the start of the game, then we saw what they were going to do and relaxed and we dug a hole.
“We sent a lot of balls over top of the goal. It’s a good think Karla Bakke and Britney Fredrick stayed tough in the middle all game and kept sending balls through. You knew one had to fall eventually. We had two overtimes in a row now and two completely different games.”
Watertown plays at Waukesha North on Thursday, then returns to conference play Tuesday at Slinger.
JV falls: Watertown’s junior varsity lost 2-1. CJ Douglas scored for the Goslings.
