Luther Prep’s Chandra Keller was the lone member of the Phoenix tennis team to advance out of Monday’s WIAA Division 2 subsectional held at Brandt/Quirk Park.
Needing to win just one match, Keller rallied from 2-5 down in the second set to earn a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Waupun’s Savannah Boersma and grab a spot at the sectional.
“I was very excited with how she played and was able to get through,” Luther Prep coach Tim Wrobel said. “She has worked hard all season and plays with tenacity … it came through today. She started the season as our No. 2 and just kept getting better.”
Luther Prep scored eight points in the subsectional to finish fourth, well off the pace of 24 set by subsectional champion Ripon.
Luther Prep picked up two points from Elizabeth Broring at No. 2 singles. Broring opened with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Wisconsin Dells’ Taylor Remington, but then lost to Lodi’s Cameron Kellogg to end her season.
The Phoenix also got two points from Kelly Wegmann at No. 4 singles. Wegmann started her day with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Wayland Academy’s Jessie Neumann before falling to Ripon’s Annie Docter 6-0, 6-0 to end her year.
Luther Prep’s No. 2 doubles team of Karis Naumann and Emma Kinney also scored two points, defeating Mauston’s Elizabeth Domek and Jenna Reed 6-2, 6-1 in their opening match. The LPS pair then ended the season with a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Ripon’s Stephanie Borgardt and Hannah Henderson.
