Jared Regnerus and Luke Jansen scored goals for Central Wisconsin Christian in a 2-0 nonconference victory over Luther Prep’s boys soccer team Monday at LPS.

Central Wisconsin Christian (14-3-1) got on the board at 49 minutes, 32 seconds when Regnerus scored a penalty kick after a push in the box was called.

Jansen scored the second goal on a give-and-go assist from Lucas VanderBerg in the 70th minute.

Luther Prep (11-6) was narrowly outshot 14-11 for the match.

The first half was very choppy. Neither side could get any long runs or possessions. After two or three passes, the opposition would step in and counter. CWC had some tall players (6-foot-8, 6-6, and two at 6-5), so the Phoenix tried to keep the ball on the ground away from the air.

The Phoenix knew coming in that the Crusaders played a flat four in the back that tried to get the offside trap, and it worked a couple of times.

Each team put five shots on goal in a scoreless first half.

CWC did a nice job of taking Luther Prep out of its game plan by not allowing the Phoenix to work the ball up the field inside-out.

As the game progressed, Luther Prep tried to pass over the top and run on the ball, but CWC’s defense was on the spot and did not allow good looks or runs.

Phoenix head coach Nate Kieselhorst felt the push in the box call was questionable, and thought CWC was off-sides on the second goal. He felt the game played pretty evenly, and said the Crusaders’ coach thought this would make for an interesting rematch deep in the playoffs.

The Crusaders are currently ranked among Division 3 teams and will likely be the No. 1 or 2 seed in Luther Prep’s upcoming regional.

“It was a game that gave my players a look at the post season against a very good team,” Kieselhorst said. “It was a good sounding board. They saw that they could play at that level. Yet we also saw that we have some work to do as well.

“Regardless of the questionable calls, we did not possess the ball as we needed. They were the better team today, but I hope to see them again down the line in the post season.”

Luther Prep plays at Lake Mills today at 6:45 p.m.
