Cross country team praise

Dear Editor:

Kudos to the Watertown High School Cross Country team for their outstanding, beyond-the-call-of-duty, actions Saturday morning, and they didn’t even race.

Early Saturday morning, we were walking around the WHS stadium, homecoming was Friday night, and wow, was it a mess. There was trash everywhere, inside the stadium, in the bleachers, under the bleachers and outside the stadium. It was disgusting! I mean, is it that difficult to find a trash can?

On our return past the stadium we noticed several members of the WHS CC team and coaches policing the area. I don’t have any idea how long they were there, but when we walked Sunday morning — wow, it was beautiful. The entire stadium area was spotless.

My guess is nobody asked them to do this, but, throughout my teaching/coaching career I tried to impress upon students and athletes that character means doing the right thing when nobody is watching.

Well, WHS CC, this time somebody was watching.

Congratulations, thank you and good luck with the rest of your season.
