Grace Nitz

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. -- Grace Nitz was called home to the Lord on Thursday, March 7, 2019, at the age of 90 in Orange.

She was born on Aug. 1, 1928, to Martin and Milda (née Frenz) Wetzel and was made a child of God through baptism on Aug. 12 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freistadt, Wisconsin. Having attended Lutheran school during her grade school years, she was confirmed in the faith. After graduating from Lutheran High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1946, she continued to work as a secretary in the city.

Later, she became secretary to the president of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary in Mequon, Wisconsin, where she met her future husband, Frederic Nitz. They were married Aug. 1, 1948, at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Lord blessed them with five children: Gloria, Daniel, James, Margaret and Jonathan.

Grace took great joy in following the conviction expressed by Ruth (1:6), "Where you go, I will go ..." The Lord led them to serve churches in Whiteriver and Cibecue, Arizona; Hendricks, Minnesota, and Arco, South Dakota; Cochrane, Cream and Buffalo City, Wisconsin; New Ulm, Minnesota; and Sun City, Arizona. In retirement, they moved to Watertown, Wisconsin, where they were members at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Following her husband's death in 2002, Grace continued to live in Watertown until 2010 when she moved to California to live with her daughter Gloria and husband, Jerry Sydow.

Grace is survived by her children: Gloria (Jerry) Sydow of Garden Grove, the Rev. Daniel (Mary) Nitz of Beatrice, Nebraska, Margaret (Mark) Metz of Greencastle, Pennsylvania, and Jonathan (Stephanie) Nitz; her grandchildren: Vicki (Scott) Sage, Adam (Cara) Nitz, Amy (Dr. Derek) Weichel, the Rev. Marcus (Mickie) Nitz of Placentia, and sister-in-law Carol Nitz of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Frederic; her son James; and her sister, Marion Bittorf.
