March 2, 1927 - February 6, 2020
Watertown -- Donald Emil Maas, 92, of Watertown, left this world and went to his heavenly home on Thursday, February 6, 2020. Donald (Donny), the son of Emil and Verena (nee Schramm) Maas was born at home on March 2, 1927 in the Town of Lebanon, Wisconsin. He attended and was confirmed at Immanual Lutheran Church and school in Lebanon, and he was a life-long member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church. Don married Lilues Thurow on May 22, 1948 in Watertown. They were married for 71 years. "Donny Maas", as he was affectionately known to all, was faithful to his Lord, his wife and his family. Growing up during the Depression taught him the value of hard work. He began working for farmers at an early age until he saved enough money to buy his first dairy farm in Lebanon in 1956. Many years later, in 1969, he bought a farm in Richwood where he, Lilues and Marlin worked together for over 20 years until he retired. Donny enjoyed playing baseball in the Rock River League and later played softball in Lebanon and Ixonia into his fifties. Being one of 6 siblings made for frequent large family gatherings at birthdays and holidays during the early years. Brothers and sisters, wives and husbands, parents and children all gathered together to share home-cooked meals and many games of Sheepshead. Later years were spent enjoying his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He and Lilues also enjoyed getting together with friends on gambling trips to casinos.
Donald is survived by his wife, Lilues Maas of Watertown; children: Marlin (Laurie Werth) Maas of Madison, Chris (Gary) Clark of Ixonia, Randy (Mary Kay) Maas of Birmingham, AL, and Rick (Patty) Maas of Watertown; grandchildren: Allison (Pete) Lorenz of Watertown, Abby (Nate) Grimm of Germantown, Jonathon (Scott Dykstra) Maas of Chicago, Ethan Maas of Birmingham, AL, and Ryan Maas of Atlanta, GA; great-grandchildren: Chloe and Will Grimm of Germantown; siblings Willard (Lorna) Maas of Watertown, Luanna (Arnold) Neitzel of Lebanon and Dale (Caroline) Maas of Lebanon as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Myra Fredrich; brother, Gilbert Maas and daughter-in-law, Colleen Maas.
