BEAVER DAM -- Lake Mills won the Capitol Conference girls tennis tournament on Saturday, edging out Luther Prep by two points for the team title.
The L-Cats won the dual meet title with a perfect 4-0 record, then edged the Phoenix 18.5-16.5 at the conference tournament to lock up the overall title.
"Tennis won the conference tournament to become 2018 Capitol Conference Champions," Lake Mills girls tennis coach Cameron Dary said.
"Congrats to (our) first team all conference players -- Isabel Retrum, Mia Kroll, Sophia Thompson and Hannah Alexander and second team players Jena Smith and Makaylah Legel and Julianna Wagner."
Retrum entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed at No. 2 singles. She defeated Lodi's Mya Bowman 6-2, 6-4 to reach the finals, where she beat Columbus' Carly Weinberger 4-6, 6-4, 10-4.
Kroll was the top seed at No. 3 singles. She beat Lodi's Dorothy Deans 7-5, 6-1 to reach the finals, where she defeated Luther Prep's Haley Olson 6-2, 6-2.
Thompson and Alexander were the top seeded team in the No. 3 doubles flight. They beat Lodi's Krista Mayberry and Summer Stocks 6-0, 6-0 to reach the finals, where they got past Columbus' Chloe Roberts and Sarah Zittel 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.
Smith was the No. 2 seed at No. 1 singles.
She beat Columbus' Taryn Lang 6-4, 6-3, then lost to Luther Prep's Alethia Schmidt in the finals. The top-seeded Schmidt rallied to win 2-6, 7-5, 10-2 after beating Lodi's Haley Nichols 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals.
Legel and Wagner were the second-seeded team at No. 1 doubles. They beat Luther Prep's Charis Glende ad Josie Bieberitz 6-2, 6-2 to reach the finals, where they lost to Lodi's top-seeded team of Adriana Lee and Leah Beyer 6-3, 7-6 (2).
Luther Prep had two flight champions -- Schmidt at No. 1 singles and the No. 2 doubles team of Tabita Vannieuwenhoven and Emma Wieting, who entered the tournament as the second seed.
They beat Lodi's Alihah Sebert and Olivia Lange 6-2, 6-2 to reach the finals, where they defeated fourth-seeded Emma Baxter and Sidney Smith from Columbus 6-2, 6-2.
Luther Prep's Lauren Kamps placed second at No. 4 singles. The third-seeded Kamps upset second seeded Alyson Theilen of Columbus 6-4, 6-1 to reach the finals, where she lost to top-seeded Taylor Pear from Lodi 7-6 (1), 7-5.
On Tuesday, Lake Mills hosts Mayville while Luther Prep travels to take on Jefferson in a pair of nonconference duals.
