JUNEAU -- Juneau Mayor Dan Wegener selected a replacement for the vacancy created in Ward 3 by the unexpected death of Clarence "Butch" Chase.
John Schuster will serve through the spring of 2020. Although Chase was recently appointed to the Ward 3 seat, Schuster expressed interest in the vacancy after Chase was selected. Wegener said at that time, he and Chase discussed Schuster. Wegener said Chase told him that if anything ever happened to him, he would want Schuster to take his place on the council. Schuster is expected to be sworn in during or before next month's meeting.
Wegener said the Juneau Common Council Tuesday night did approve the appointment of an alderman in Ward 1. Common Council President Jason Buske moved out of the city, creating the vacancy. Paul Shanks was sworn in to fill out the remainder of Buske's term, which runs through April of 2021.
Wegener said at Tuesday's meeting Cheryl Braun was elected to replace Buske in serving as council president.
