OCONOMOWOC — One person was killed Thursday in a two-vehicle crash that occurred on the Highway 16 off-ramp leading to Wisconsin Avenue on the west side of Oconomowoc.
According to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Michael Cherci, who talked with the Daily Times this morning by phone during his road patrol, the crash occurred around 9:29 a.m. and killed in the crash was David R. Pipkin, 76, address unknown.
Pipkin was a passenger in a Dodge County Medical Transport van that ran off the road. Pipkin died at 3:25 p.m. Thursday, according to Cherci.
The driver of the van and another passenger sustained minor injuries. The driver of the second vehicle involved was not hurt, although that vehicle sustained a minor impact from the van.
Cherci provided an unofficial narrative of the crash because an accident report has yet to be completed. He said the medical transport van was driving up the exit ramp from Highway 16 when the van accelerated suddenly and ran through a stop sign, hit a median and became airborne. As it came down, it is believed it struck the second vehicle, then ran up a hill and rolled over.
“Based on statements from the driver of the van, the vehicle’s accelerator stuck and it ran up the ramp at a high rate of speed,” Cherci said.
He noted that the crash remains under investigation and the vehicle will be inspected to determine the condition of the accelerator.
