Frequently asked questions regarding the changes and improvements to the Watertown Daily Times website.
The Watertown Daily Times is changing the way you, our readers, get access to our digital products? Why the change?
The Daily Times is your source for vitally important news and information for southern Dodge and northern Jefferson counties.
We have an award-winning news team that covers the news you need to have in your daily lives. We get it to you in a timely fashion and in a variety of formats for today’s digital world. That means you can receive our product in print or digital, tablet or smartphone. No matter how you want to receive our newspaper, we have you covered.
Our readers have been abundantly clear that they want the newspaper in multiple formats and in a timely manner.
With our new improvements we’ll meet and exceed all of our readers’ needs in this complex world of publishing. Effective with the Feb. 10, 2014, edition, we are simplifying the process for our subscribers to receive our content in the format that works best for them.
To that end the Daily Times is creating a new subscription level which offers all of our content in many different forms. This new level is called Total Access and is available to all subscribers. We are asking and encouraging all of our subscribers to accept this new level of service. It will ensure that Watertown as a community and this newspaper continue to have the solid local reporting, news and information that helps you not only today but for generations to come.
The website looks different. Why did you change it?
The expanded content requires a more contemporary website design. The technology the Daily Times uses to create and manage the website and content offers us many design improvements that you are now seeing. Since we now publish much more online information, the modern look will make it far easier for you to navigate the site.
How can you justify charging a fee for something that has been free for so long?
News gathering is an expensive and labor-intensive part of newspapers and the Daily Times is no exception. It is simply not possible to continue free distribution of our highly valued news content. This trend of customers paying for local news content is the new standard of the newspaper industry.
Does this mean you’ll soon discontinue publishing a print newspaper?
The print edition will continue in its present format. These changes are all enhancements to the print edition. This does not change what we do as a company or how we serve the community. The enhancements we’re making to our digital products are a reflection of market demand. Readers want more content in a format for their electronic devices. This change is a reflection of new technologies available to everyone. Advertisers want more solutions to grow their business. We are not forcing anyone out of print. In fact, we encourage everyone to get the paper every day and receive the Total Access bundle. Expanding our digital offerings is what our customers want. The Daily Times print edition is the cornerstone of the services we offer the community and it will continue that way well into the future.
Will I need to download an app to get these services?
Multiple devices are able to access Daily Times content without the need to download an app. However, for best viewing on a smartphone or tablet, it is recommended that you download the app. It is included for free in the Daily Times Total Access subscription bundle.

Is the “subscribe” window a secure URL?
