Jefferson falls in final seconds; L-Cats rip Deerfield

JEFFERSON - East Troy's Scott Beckwith scored with 17 seconds left to give East Troy its first lead of the second half as the Trojans rallied to a 56-53 Rock Valley Conference victory over host Jefferson Tuesday.

The Eagles fell behind 14-11 after the first quarter, but got 13 points from senior Trevor Probst in the second to go up 27-24 at half. Jefferson led most of the second half, but made just six-of-11 free throws in the fourth as East Troy stayed close enough to go in front with Beckwith's layup with 17 seconds to play.

The Eagles had a chance to regain the lead as junior guard Luis Torres drove the lane and put up a floater from inside 7 feet. The shot rimmed out and East Troy's Mitch Windle grabbed the rebound and hit two free throws with 2 seconds left to seal the victory for the Trojans.

“We were down early, but took the lead by half and led most of the second half,” Jefferson coach Jay Benish said. “We just needed to hit a couple more free throws in the fourth. We got to the line, but needed a couple more to fall. That let them be close enough to beat us in the final 17 seconds.”

Probst led all scorers in the game with 24 points while Torres finished with nine in the loss for the Eagles (3-4 overall, 2-3 RVC). Windle scored 20 to lead the Trojans (4-3, 4-0).

Jefferson plays at Evansville Friday.

Senior forward Derek Pieper had 15 points and eight rebounds for Dodgeland, while junior guard/forward Mark Wolfram added 10 points and five steals for the Trojans in a losing cause.

“Two stats stick out,” Dodgeland boys basketball coach Bill Otte said. “They had 17 offensive boards and we only lose by seven. Our defense was pretty good. The problem was we didn't box them out. We didn't put a body on them. That's the one thing we have been talking about all year, using our size to get boards, and we haven't been able to do that yet.”

Belleville feasted on 21 Dodgeland turnovers and improved to 4-4.

“Their pressure hurt us tonight,” Otte said. “I thought we were turning the corner on the turnover bug. It doesn't get any easier.”

Dodgeland plays at Williams Bay on Thursday.
