Lakeside hammers Waterloo

WATERLOO - Lakeside Lutheran got 18 points from sophomore Alex Anthon in a 73-22 victory over host Waterloo Tuesday.

Lakeside led 22-5 after the first quarter and extended the lead to 35-9 at half. After outscoring Waterloo 28-3 in the third, the Warriors called off the dogs.

“Their three quarter court trap bothered us quite a bit,” Waterloo girls basketball coach Tom Cianciolo said.

“We needed to break it. We need to get better at that. After that it was just ball handling, passing, cutting to the ball. We knew from practices they would overplay us on wing passes. They managed to get some steals and break down the floor faster than we can get back.

“The fourth quarter was our best quarter. We had a better defensive effort. Kristy Skalitzky and April Haines stepped up and got aggressive going for the rebounds. They propelled us in that fourth quarter.”

Waterloo plays at Marshall on Friday. Lakeside Lutheran plays at Lake Mills Friday.

“Very tough start,” Dodgeland girls basketball coach Matt Yuenger said. “You name it, we did it. We threw the ball away. We had open looks and we bricked them hard. It was like we had cement shoes. We were slow on defense. We didn't get back. I don't know if it's because we were missing shots, but we got down and were out of it. But the girls didn't quit.”

Junior guard Kassy Kluge led the Trojans with 12 points. Senior forward Morgan Kuhn added 10 points and 12 rebounds. Senior forward Tieraney Planasch added four points, seven rebounds and four blocks.
