Ronald Stelter
Ronald L. Stelter, 71, of Watertown, passed away Friday morning, July 25, 2008 at the Golden Living Center in Watertown, following a lingering illness.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown with Rev. Michael Jensen officiating. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery in Watertown.
Visitation will be Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Hafemeister Funeral Home in Watertown and at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
Memorials are suggested to Lakeside Lutheran High School or St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran School Building Fund.
Ronald Leroy Stelter was born Jan. 29, 1937, in Clyman, son of Rev. Bernard J.E. Stelter and Wilhelmina (Burke) Stelter. He attended grade school at Zion Lutheran Grade School in Clyman and from 1950 to 1958, he attended Northwestern Prep and College in Watertown where he earned a B.A. in liberal arts. He enjoyed participation in football, basketball and baseball and received a number of awards while attending Northwestern. Ron attended one year at the Lutheran Seminary in Thiensville and then opted to attend Oshkosh State University to pick up some coaching training. Because money was always tight, Ron also worked jobs as an apple picker near Germantown and on a mink ranch near Grafton. While in Oshkosh, he received his call to Lakeside Lutheran High School, now located in Lake Mills. He joined the Lakeside staff in 1960 and originated the football and baseball programs of this new high school, first located in Fort Atkinson in the old St. Paul Lutheran Grade School building. He also coached the JV basketball program the first few years of the school's existence. Included in his duties were running the area Lutheran Tournament several times and organizing the grade school Spelling Contest for 10 years.
Ron wore many hats in the athletic department at Lakeside. In football, he coached from 1960-1982. Lakeside joined the Eastern Suburban Conference in 1969, winning the championship in 1970 and 1975. In basketball, Lakeside joined the conference in 1966 and won several championships through 1978. Ron was also the athletic director for several years while Lakeside was in the Eastern Suburban Conference. In addition to coaching duties and his academic courses (English, Latin and mathematics), he drove the only large school bus Lakeside owned at the time, on a route from Watertown to Fort Atkinson with stops in Ixonia, Oconomowoc, Johnson Creek and Jefferson. He also drove his teams to all football and baseball games for 15 years.
Because he was an exceedingly hard worker, Ron worked during his summer months at Clyman Canning Factory for 43 years. While working at the Clyman Plant, Ron met Rosalyn Maas and married her on July 23, 1960 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Hustisford.
Ron played baseball for the Rock River League for 26 years with the Clyman Canners. He was a member of the Old Timer's Organization and was inducted into the Rock River Hall of Fame. Besides playing baseball, he enjoyed bowling on the Monday night Watertown City League at the Watertown Bowl and in a mixed couple's league in Hustisford. He thoroughly enjoyed the many people he had the pleasure of playing sports with, as well as his co-workers and those he coached and taught over the years.
Ron was an avid sports fan and when he was able, enjoyed attending his grandchildren's events.
In July of 2001, Ron went to the University Hospital in Madison where, having been diagnosed with cancer of the larynx, his voice box was surgically removed. He had a G-tube inserted so he could receive nourishment directly through his stomach. After this surgery and initial radiation treatment, Ron needed to go to Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee for further radiation and chemotherapy treatments when he was diagnosed with sinus cancer in 2003. He had numerous doctor and hospital visits during this time and loving family and caring friends took care of this transportation. His most recent struggle was with lung cancer, which he was diagnosed with earlier this year.
He was a devout Lutheran, being a member of St. Mark's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Watertown, and had been active on the church council for a year.
Survivors include his wife, Rosalyn Stelter of Watertown; four children, Dawn (Stephen) Coleman of Watertown, Gwen (Doug) Canady of New Berlin, Wade Stelter of Watertown and Lana Stelter of Watertown; five grandchildren, Stephanie Coleman, Serena Coleman, Isaiah Coleman, Jordan Canady and Olivia Canady; a brother, Rev. Edward (LaVon) Stelter of Two Rivers; two sisters, Margaret Stueber and Dorothy Stelter, both of Clyman; sisters-in-law, Gloria Stelter of Sheboygan and Margaret Stelter of California; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son on April 23, 1970; four brothers, Martin, Eric, Paul and Rev. Herbert Stelter.
Many will remember him as a successful athlete, teacher and coach, but he will most notably be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be greatly missed.
Although most of this time he lived at home, thanks to Golden Living Center and AseraCare Hospice for their care during the last few months.
