LAKE MILLS - Lake Mills High School held its annual awards night on Wednesday. Students and staff were honored for various achievements.
Lake Mills High School student Jacob Day was named winner of the annual Bausch & Lomb Science Award on Wednesday at Lake Mills High School. The science award, a bronze medal paperweight, is presented each year to winners at about 6,500 participating schools throughout the United States, Canada and several foreign nations. More than 400,000 medals have been awarded to outstanding science students since the program started in 1933.
According to teacher, Julie Cunningham, who presented the award, “The Bausch & Lomb Science Award is especially significant because it recognizes the junior student at our school who has attained the highest scholastic standing in science subjects.”
As winner of the award, Day is eligible to apply to become a University of Rochester Bausch & Lomb Scholar. This designation carries with it scholarship funds, the minimum amount being $24,000 which is $6,000 per year for four years.
Lake Mills High School students Elli Austin and Samuel Zastrow were awarded the U.S. Army Reserve National Scholar/Athlete Award.
This award is presented annually by the U.S. Army Reserve to high school students who have shown outstanding ability in both academics and athletics Cale Vogel, Athletic Director, presented the two Lake Mills High School seniors with the award at a school ceremony on Wednesday.
The U.S. Army Reserve has presented the National Scholar/Athlete Award since 1981. Since then it has become a strong tradition in many high schools. Each year, teachers, coaches and administrators from more than 12,000 high schools nationwide choose some 20,000 students as Scholar/Athlete recipients.
“The Army Reserve has a number of traditions,” Maj. General Max Baratz, Chief of the Army Reserve, said. “We are very proud to make honoring students who strive to be all they can be, one of them.”
Noah Wiedenfeld, a Lake Mills High School senior, has been nominated to compete in the national Principal's Leadership Award Scholarship Program, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals. Herff Jones, Inc. funds the PLA program.
Dr. Robert Gilpatrick, Lake Mills High School principal, announced the nomination, which places Wiedenfeld in the national competition. One hundred national winners will be chosen this spring to receive a college scholarship ranging from $1,000 to $12,000.
High school principals from across the country were able to nominate one of their student leaders. Nominees were selected based on their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record. They were also required to write an essay.
“Every year the nominees for the Principal's Leadership Award are just phenomenal and Noah Wiedenfeld is no different,” Gerald N. Tirozzi, executive director of the association, said. “He is an excellent example of what a true student leader embodies and deserves to be commended for his excellence in the classroom and community.”
In recognizing leadership in co-curricular activities as well as academic performance, the association scholarship recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education. Co-curricular activities are an essential part of the school curriculum.
A number of students were recognized for being in the top 6 percent of their class.
The Lynde & Harry Bradley Foundation joined forces with the Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club and The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to reward all public, private, and parochial middle and high school students grades seven through 12 in the eight county area of southeastern Wisconsin for academic achievement and improvement. Participating counties include Dodge, Jefferson, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Washington, and Waukesha.
This innovative program recognizes student achievers during the 2007-08 school year. Students in the top 6 percent of their class in academic achievement will be recognized as well as the most improved students up to 6 percent selected by the principals/guidance counselors of their school.
These students received a recognition certificate and two tickets for a Milwaukee Brewers baseball game during the 2008 season. They will also be recognized through a listing of individual names and schools in a special section of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel to be published in the near future. It is estimated that over 19,000 students in more than 500 schools were eligible for recognition through the Student Achiever Awards Program.
