WHS students given scholarships



Watertown High School seniors shared in over $600,000 worth of financial aids at the annual scholarship program Sunday afternoon in the school auditorium.

The list, which continues to grow each year, included 21 students who received $10,000 or more in awards.

Sunday's program featured scholarships awarded locally. In addition, several hundred thousand dollars of scholarship money is expected to be given to local students from college and other sources which are not necessarily local.

Heading the list of locally administered scholarships was Hannah Quist, who received one of six Rev. Frederick W. Lemke and Ruth Hauser Lemke awards valued at $21,000 over four years. In addition to the Lemke scholarship, Quist received one of three Wisconsin Academic Excellence scholarships, valued at $9,000 over four years, the $1,000 Nack Valedictorian scholarship and one of two $1,000 Watertown Kiwanis Noon Club scholarships, as well as the Herried award, for a total value of $32,000.

Quist is the daughter of Carl and Lynda Quist.

She has been involved in Teens of Tomorrow, DECA, Key Club, mock trial, flag squad, solo and ensemble, marching band, mentoring and is a member of Tri-M Music Honor Society and the National Honor Society.

Quist plans to attend University of Wisconsin-Madison where she will major in sociology or anthropology.

Rachel Butts received one of two Betty J. Joseph scholarships valued at $26,000 over four years, along with the $500 Watertown Turners scholarship.

She is the daughter of Henry and Sarah Butts.

She has been active in student council, Ecology Club, Peer Helpers, Teens of Tomorrow, DECA, marching band, National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Butts plans to attend Michigan State University where she will study biology.

Joshua Knoll received the second Betty J. Joseph scholarship, valued at $26,000 over four years.

He is the son of Mark and Allison Knoll.

He has participated in cross country, track and field, CAPP Physics Program and Main Street project.

Knoll plans to attend University of Wisconsin-La Crosse where he will major in premedicine.

Zachary Manders received one of the six Lemke awards valued at $21,000 each over four years, along with the $1,000 Matthew R. Zindars Memorial scholarship.

Manders is the son of Barb and the late Michael Manders.

He has been involved in Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Teens of Tomorrow, tennis, football, golf, hockey and numerous volunteering activities. He is a member of the National Honor Society.

Manders plans to major in business at UW-Madison.

Emily Merritt received one of the six Lemke awards, valued at $21,000 each over four years, along with the $150 National Honor Society scholarship.

Merritt is the daughter of Steve and Joan Merritt.

She has been active in DECA, FBLA, math team, softball, volleyball, basketball, intramurals, Ecology Club, band, marching band, various clubs, church activities, volunteering and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Merritt plans to attend UW-Madison.

The three remaining Lemke scholarships, valued at $21,000 over four years, were awarded to Andrew Schuelke, Melanie Braunschweig and Zachary Lauersdorf.

Schuelke is the son of Troy and Margret Schuelke.

He has participated in football, basketball, FBLA, DECA, math team, various clubs, volunteering, church activities and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Schuelke plans to attend UW-La Crosse where he will major in pre-dentistry.

Braunschweig is the daughter of Randy and Kelly Braunschweig.

She has been involved in National Honor Society, Ecology Club, International Club, basketball, volleyball, various committees, and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Braunschweig plans to attend UW-La Crosse where she will major in premedicine.

Lauersdorf is the son of Glen and Bonnie Lauersdorf.

He has been active in DECA, FBLA, soccer, basketball, baseball, church activities, volunteering, mentoring and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Lauersdorf plans to attend UW-La Crosse where he will major in accounting.

Nicole Noe received the Joseph E. Davies scholarship which is valued at $20,000 over four years. She also received a $1,000 Watertown Kiwanis Noon Club scholarship.

Noe is the daughter of Ron and Connie Noe.

She has participated in Teens of Tomorrow, mock trial, softball, various clubs and volunteering.

Noe plans to study foreign language at UW-Madison.

Danielle Klute received one of three Christopher and Dorothy Coogan scholarships with a total value of $14,000 each over fours. She also received a $500 WHS Art Club.

Klute is the daughter of Timothy Klute.

She has been involved in dance team, gymnastics, track and field, mock trial and various clubs.

Klute plans to attend the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design where she will major in illustration.

Kai Ludwig received three scholarships, including one of three Wisconsin Academic Excellence scholarships valued at $9,000 each over four years, one of two Ella Ruebhausen scholarships valued at $4,800 each over four years and a $500 Watertown Booster Club scholarship.

Ludwig is the son of Daniel and Patricia Ludwig.

He has been active in soccer, track and field, swimming, basketball, math team, pit orchestra, jazz ensemble, marching band, pep band, 1st Brigade Band, International Club, church activities and is a member of the National Honor Society and Tri-M Honors Society.

Ludwig plans to attend UW-Madison where he will major in pre-med.

The students who were awarded the two remaining Coogan scholarships, valued at $14,000 each over four years, were Marie Hansen and Stephanie Schoenherr.

Hansen is the daughter of Brenda Kelman and Darrell Hansen.

She has participated in Teens of Tomorrow, various clubs, committees and volunteering.

Hansen plans to attend UW-Whitewater.

Schoenherr is the daughter of Scott and Pam Schoenherr.

She has been been active in FBLA, DECA, Teens of Tomorrow, volleyball, church activities, intern apprenticeship and is a member of the National Honor Society.

Schoenherr plans to attend UW-Whitewater where she will major in accounting.

Three students received the Muriel Thauer scholarship valued at $12,000 each over four years. They include Samuel Strauch, Cameron Pauli and Mary Grajewski.

Strauch also received the $500 WHS Social Studies Award and the $25 Gettysburg Address Reader award.

Pauli was also awarded the $500 Jefferson County 4-H Leaders scholarship.

Grajewski also received a $200 American Legion Medal award.

Christopher Roche received the third Wisconsin Academic Excellence scholarship, valued at $9,000 each over four years. He also received the Ken Riedl scholarship valued at $2,000 over two years, and the $1,500 John and Joyce Byrne/UW-Madison scholarship.

Three Edna H. Wiegel scholarships, at a value of $12,000 each over four years, were presented to Aurrielle Eberhardy, Feliciana Garcia and Rocio Becerra.

The Brandt-Quirk scholarship, valued at $10,000 over four years, was awarded to James Houchin.

Samantha Lehmann received three scholarships, including one of six Joseph and Sharon Darcey Foundation scholarships valued at $6,500 each, one of two Ruben and Frances Oestreich scholarships valued at $1,500 each, and the $1,500 American Association of University Women scholarship.

Joshua Archambeau received one of six Darcey scholarships valued at $6,500 each as well as a $500 Watertown Booster Club scholarship.

Naomi Fisher received three awards, including one of two Larry and Sally Reich scholarships with a value of $5,000 each over four years, the $1,000 Dr. Stan Larsen Memorial award and the $1,000 Lions Club of Watertown scholarship.

The four remaining Darcey scholarships, valued at $6,500, were awarded to Veronica Fuller, Michael Simons, Steven Mueller and Zachary Hoof.

The second Reich scholarship, valued at $5,000 each over four years, was awarded to Courtney Sullivan. She also received a $500 Watertown Booster Club scholarship and the $500 Isabelle Jaedecke Nursing award.

Ethan Schuler received the second Ella Ruebhausen scholarship, valued at $4,800 each over four years.
