Gas leak ends in evacuation

Nearly 10 people were evacuated from homes and traffic was detoured for about 30 minutes because of a natural gas leak Tuesday at the 300 block of North Church Street.

The Watertown Fire Department responded to the gas leak in front of 310 N. Church St. at 2:11 p.m. Shortly after We Energies arrived at the scene to shut off the leak.

“We Energies came out and looked at it and said it was probably just a mistake, that somebody just probably forgot to cap the line,” said Sgt. Robert Kaminski of the Watertown Police Department.

During the leak nine people were evacuated from their homes, said Watertown fire Chief Henry Butts. He added the evacuees were able to return to the homes about 30 minutes later.

Police also shut off a section of North Church Street for about 30 minutes, Kaminski said.

No injuries were reported.
