Watertown wrestlers fall to Hartford

Don Krueser is no longer the wrestling coach, but Hartford still looked like Hartford Thursday night at WHS.

The Orioles scored seven first period pins and won 12 of 14 matches to whip Watertown 66-8 in the Wisconsin Little Ten Conference finale for both teams.

Watertown's lone victories came from sophomore Justin McFarland (24-6, 6-1), who won a 16-0 technical fall over Weston Klink at 135, and junior heavyweight Bill Caudle (20-8, 5-2), who beat John Gouger 8-1.

Only two other matches went the distance.

At 160, Hartford's Ben Bunzel beat Tyler Cutsforth 7-2 in overtime. At 171, Hartford's Jordan Hamilton beat Travis Dahlgren 5-2.

Bunzel scored a first period takedown, but Cutsforth controlled the next two periods before allowing Bunzel to take him to his back in overtime.

“Tyler had a good match,” Watertown wrestling coach Rob Harms said. “He's coming around. He's another kid who doesn't have a whole lot of experience, but he listens in practice and he's coachable. He's had fears about shooting underneath, but he's getting over that and he's improving.”

Dahlgren and Caudle were looking to throw their opponents but could not.

“Dahlgren had a good match,” Harms said. “If he'd gotten in closer quarters, he could have gotten some throws in. Bill controlled his match. The kid was backing up the whole match. He made us nervous near the edge when he got head thrown a couple times, but for the most part, he stayed in good control and in good position.”

Watertown (1-6 in conference) competes at the WLT tournament in Slinger on Saturday, Feb. 2.
