Lester H. Turke

Lester Hubert Turke, 93, of Watertown, passed away on Monday afternoon, Jan. 21, 2008, at Swifthaven Assisted Living in Watertown. While he had multiple age-related medical issues, he died suddenly and unexpectedly, presumably of a cardiac cause.

Lester was born on Feb. 17, 1914, in the town of Watertown, son of Louis and Adela Turke (formerly Schuett), the fifth of eight children.

In order to help his family, he left school at the age of 14 to work on a farm, and dairy farming subsequently became his lifetime vocation, though he worked as a cheesemaker for a period of time as well. Additionally, while farming full-time, he also worked full-time as a carpenter for various companies in the area, including Oliver Construction in Oconomowoc.

On May 23, 1936, he married the former Sylvia Neitzel at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Lebanon and the couple had two children over the course of their marriage.

Lester was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Lebanon, where he served as president for a time and was a member of the church council, school board and dartball team. Lester's other civic service activities included serving as a member of the Lebanon Lions Club.

Lester enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years and never lost his love for the game. He bowled for many years until he was forced to quit due to failing vision secondary to macular degeneration. He continued to follow the Packers and Brewers as best he could. Every spring, he looked forward to the start of the baseball season. While he could no longer see the television, he followed them on the radio.

Lester was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia; his parents, Louis and Adela; three brothers, Arthur, William and Armund; and three sisters, Lorena Wenzler, Hilda Henkel and Lydia Raether.

Survivors include two sons, Dr. Terry Turke of Watertown and Michael Turke of Neenah; two daughters-in-law, Janice Turke and Diane Turke; six grandchildren, Jessica Grandt-Turke, Zachary Turke, Bethany Turke, Danielle Schmidt, Jonathon Turke and Kimberly Turke; and two great-grandchildren, Logan Grandt-Turke and Hannah Grandt-Turke. Lester is also survived by his sister, Vanita Schramm, and three sisters-in-law, Frieda Turke, Edna Kuehl and Meta Turke, all of Watertown.

Memorials, if desired, may be given to Immanuel Lutheran Church, American Cancer Society or the charity of one's choice.

While he had many hardships and losses in his life, including surviving prostate cancer, lung cancer and especially the loss of his wife, Sylvia, he never lost sight of his blessings. He never complained even when he had reason to do so.

Lester was a kind, honest and loving man who will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

Stanley Johansen

Stanley Manfred Johansen of Watertown passed away peacefully at home on Monday, Jan. 21, 2008.

Stan was born on Aug. 29, 1923, on a dairy farm in Luck, the fifth child of Nels and Helga Johansen. He graduated from Frederic High School in 1941. He worked the family farm with his dad until 1953. It was in this community of Danes where he learned the skill of telling a story and the importance of looking at all situations with an alternative perspective, always with a touch of humor, making the impossible possible and the unbearable bearable.

He came to Watertown to work at the first Wisconsin branch office of Production Credit Association. He married Helen Anderson in 1960. In 1972, he started his career as the first agricultural loan officer for M&I Bank in Watertown, until his retirement in 1987.

Personally, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and community member. He served the community as president of the Jaycees, PTA and Jefferson County Bankers Association. He was involved in Lions, Toastmasters, Cub Scouts, United Fund, and a charter member of the Watertown Agri-Business Club and Wisconsin Agricultural Bankers Association. As a member of Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, he served on the council and the stewardship committee.

Greater than his dedication to community was his dedication to his family, as husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing, boating, camping and laughing. He was happiest when he could see others laugh and enjoy times spent sharing stories with friends at local restaurants, around campfires on Solberg Lake and most recently, when close friends would come to visit. He taught us to live with conviction, practice unconditional love and don't ever forget to laugh.

Stanley is survived by his wife, Helen; his children, Ridge of Green Bay, Jon of Madison and Sue and her husband Matt Green of Middleton; his grandchildren, Nicole, Cooper and Colin; a sister, Edna Lawson of Luck; two sisters-in-law, Evelyn Johansen and Gail Anderson; a brother-in-law, William (Shirley) Anderson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
