WEST BEND - Watertown's wrestling team fell to 1-7 overall and 0-3 in the Wisconsin Little Ten Conference with a 60-15 loss to West Bend East Thursday.
The Goslings won just three matches and also gave up three forfeits to West Bend East (1-2 in conference).
Sophomore Justin McFarland (140), sophomore Mike Turtenwald (152) and junior heavyweight Bill Caudle notched victories for Watertown.
McFarland (8-2, 2-1 in conference) won an 8-2 decision over Derek Gehrke.
Gehrke scored takedowns in each of the first two periods for a 4-0 lead, but McFarland responded with a reversal and three-point near fall to take a 5-4 lead into the third. Gehrke chose down to start the final period and McFarland scored another three-point near fall before Gehrke managed a reversal to cap the scoring.
“Justin started out a little slow,” Watertown wrestling coach Rob Harms said. “Then he got it going with the reversal.”
Caudle (9-1, 2-1) pinned Kyle Gehrke in 3 minutes, 26 seconds.
“That guy only had a head throw,” Harms said. “We were ready for that. It was a lot of roly poly to begin with. Bill controlled the kid and ended up reversing him and putting him on his back.”
Turtenwald pinned Keith Keskinen at 5:22 for his first conference win.
He scored first on a takedown, then gave up a reversal before scoring an escape. Then he hit another takedown with three near fall points for an 8-2 lead heading into the second period. He pushed the lead to 10-2 by reversing Keskinen and riding him out.
Keskinen chose up to start the third and Turtenwald reversed him to his back for the fall.
“Mike really jumped out to a quick lead,” Harms said.
“We talked about him getting on his offense right away and taking it to them. In the matches leading up, we let East dictate. He went out determined to set the tone, and got an early takedown. He got a little sloppy with his control on top and gave up the reverse, but managed to escape. Then he hit another takedown (and dominated the rest of the way).”
Harms felt some other matches got away.
“We had our chances,” Harms said. “Josh Aslani (125) had his kid on his back for a short time, but didn't secure it. His kid rolled through and ended up beating him, but he's coming along. Travis Dahlgren (189) was in a close one right up to the end. He actually was leading 6-5 when he got pinned with one second left on the clock.”
