Lake Mills students get awards, scholarships



LAKE MILLS - Lake Mills High School, in conjunction with the Lake Mills Rotary Club, held its 19th annual academic awards and seventh annual scholarship banquet Sunday evening in the commons and auditorium of Lake Mills High School.

The top scholarship awarded Sunday was the Joseph E. Davies, valued at $21,000 over four years for study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The award was presented to Dawn Franks-Mess, daughter of Chad and Kathleen Mess. She also received a $1,000 American Legion Post 67 scholarship and an Elks scholarship, with $300 from the local organization and $1,000 from the state. She plans to attend University of Wisconsin-Madison where she will major in education.

Michael Garman, son of Dean and Mary Garman, received a Winona State College football scholarship valued at $15,000 over five years. He plans to attend Winona State University.

Robert Lochner, son of Mike and Ruth Lochner, was awarded a Wisconsin Academic Excellence scholarship valued at $9,000 over four years, as well as a $1,000 Wisconsin Masonic Foundation scholarship and a $500 Heinrich scholarship. He plans to attend Hillsdale College where he will major in engineering.

Erin Willing, daughter of Jeffrey and Judith Willing, received a Wisconsin Academic Excellence Alternate scholarship, valued at $9,000 over four years, as well as a $1,000 Mary Simonson scholarship. She plans to attend UW-Madison where she will major in biology.

Melissa Burrow, daughter of Stan and Cathy Burrow, received a $3,000 Francis F. Carnes Memorial scholarship and a $1,500 Gary Vanderheiden Memorial scholarship. She plans to attend UW-Madison where she will major in pharmacy.

Kim Kriege, daughter of Dave and Betty Kriege, Johnson Creek, received a $2,500 Dan Mroz Memorial scholarship and a $1,000 Charles Petri Conservation scholarship. She plans to attend UW-Madison where she will major in journalism/environmental studies.

Lindsey Meyers, daughter of Lonnie and Jane Meyers, received several scholarships, including a $2,500 Rotary, $1,450 Clinton B. Setz, $1,000 Emily Wedel Memorial, $500 Michael Hammer Memorial, $500 Becky and Lyle Wallace Memorial, $400 Optimist and $250 Timothy R. Hubacher Memorial scholarships. She plans to attend University of Wisconsin-Whitewater where she will major in education.

Fanny Camacho, daughter of Roberto and Margarita Camacho, received a $1,000 Nelson H. Falk scholarship. She plans to attend UW-Madison where she will major in teaching/communications.

Stacy De Golier, daughter of Mitch and Shari De Golier, Waterloo, received a $750 Ray Steffan (United Methodist Church) scholarship and a $300 Margot Bentley Eskridge Memorial scholarship. She plans to attend Minnesota State University-Mankato where she will major in theater/arts.

Samantha Austin, daughter of Bill and Lynnell Austin, received a $2,500 Rotary scholarship, $1,450 Clinton B. Setz scholarship, $1,000 American Legion Auxiliary Post 67 scholarship and a $1,000 American Legion Post 67 scholarship. She plans to attend University of Minnesota-Twin Cities where she will major in business.

Adrian Gonzalez, son of Bob and Danette Gonzalez, received the President's Distinguished Student scholarship valued at $4,000 over four years, as well as the William P. Schmeisser Memorial scholarship valued at $1,500 over three semesters, the $600 Lake Mills Ambassador scholarship and a $400 Optimist scholarship. He plans to attend University of Minnesota-Twin Cities where he will major in business.

Madeleine Montony, daughter of Christopher and Judith Montony, received a $1,200 Clara E. Hein Memorial scholarship. She plans to attend University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where she will major in communications.

Kirsten Herschberger, daughter of Glenn and Susan Herschberger, received a $500 Lake Mills Law Enforcement scholarship. She plans to attend Northwestern College in Minnesota where she will major in political science/criminal justice.

Ben Libal, son of Paul and Laura Libal, received an Elks scholarship, with $300 from the local organization and $1,000 from the state, and a $2,500 Rotary scholarship. He plans to attend University of Wisconsin-Green Bay where he will major in Spanish/German.

Jason Benisch, son of Thomas and Christine Benisch, received a $1,000 Nelson H. Falk scholarship, a $500 LMEA scholarship and a $250 Timothy R. Hubacher Memorial scholarship. He plans to attend UW-Whitewater where he will major in education.

Max Bade, son of Erik and Liz Bade, received a $2,500 Francis F. Carnes scholarship. He plans to attend Milwaukee School of Engineering where he will major in engineering.

Kyle Woolever, son of LaVerne and Barbara Woolever, Johnson Creek, received a $300 Marvin Maasch scholarship. He plans to attend University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point where he will major in marine biology.

Joni Wethall, daughter of John and Laura Wethall, received a $2,500 Francis F. Carnes scholarship and a $1,000 Nelson H. Falk scholarship. She plans to attend University of Wisconsin-La Crosse where she will major in education.

Joseph Gaber, son of Sandra Nelson, received a $2,500 Francis F. Carnes scholarship and a $500 Lake Mills Light and Water scholarship. He plans to attend UW-Stevens Point where he will major in wildlife management.

Cate Urbas, daughter of Lani Urbas, Waterloo, received a $5,000 DEMCO Inc. scholarship. She plans to attend UW-La Crosse where she will major in Spanish/economics.

Samantha Draeger, daughter of Jeff and Peg Draeger, received a $400 Lake Mills Ambassador scholarship, a $400 Vera Bohnsack scholarship and a $300 Rachel Maasch scholarship. She plans to attend UW-Whitewater where she will major in musical theater.

Sarah Williams, daughter of Andy and Elizabeth Williams, received a $1,000 FFA Alumni scholarship and a $500 Creekwood Farms, Inc. scholarship. She plans to attend UW-Whitewater where she will major in journalism.

Dan Breunig, son of Robert and Mary Beth Breunig, Watertown, received a $200 Bill Fetherston Bowling scholarship. He plans to attend UW-Whitewater where he will major in radiology.

Sinclaire Joyce, daughter of Kathleen Barthalomew, received a $500 Summit Credit Union scholarship. She plans to attend UW-Milwaukee where she will major in English/education.

Kelly Wolff, daughter of Jim Wolff and Pam Voigt, received a $5,000 scholarship from Marian College, a Lions scholarship valued at $2,000 over two years and a $400 Bill Fetherston Bowling scholarship. She plans to attend Marian College where she will major in nursing.

Rhonda Bleecker, daughter of Dale and Denise Bleecker, received a $1,000 FFA Alumni scholarship and a $100 John C. Imrie scholarship. She plans to attend MATC where she will major in nursing.

Elizabeth Nelson, daughter of Morgan and Barb Nelson, received a $1,000 Rotary scholarship, a $1,000 Watertown Memorial Hospital scholarship and a $600 Lake Mills Ambassador scholarship. She plans to attend Mid-State Technical College where she will major in nursing.

Taylor Hawkes, son of Tom and June Hawkes, received a $1,000 Rotary scholarship. He plans to attend San Diego Golf Academy where he will major in management.

Stephen Wilson, son of Edward and Terry Davis, received a $300 USBC Jeffco Bowling scholarship and a $200 Bill Fetherston Bowling scholarship. He plans to attend Waukesha County Technical College.

Casey Behm, son of Carey and Sue Behm, Johnson Creek, received a Sentry scholarship valued at $1,000 over four years. He plans to attend MATC-Madison where he will major in automotive technology.

A number of students were honored for their academic achievement.

The students received either an academic letter, medallion or plaque, based on points received throughout their high school semesters. Seniors received a "last chance" third quarter to earn points. Studnes receive two points for high honor roll and one point for honor roll. In order to obtain a letter an individual needs six points. A medallion requires 10 points and a plaque requires 14 points.

The program opened with Gene Hasel, Rotary president, giving a welcome and some introductions. Remarks were then made by Dean Sanders, superintendent of schools and Dr. Robert Gilpatrick, high school principal. Sanders, Gilpatrick and Diane Radovan, high school guidance counselor, then presented the academic awards.

Students received either an academic letter, medallion or plaque, based on points received throughout their high school semesters. Seniors received a "last chance" third quarter to earn points.
