Bluejays lose slugfest at Deerfield

DEERFIELD - Chalk up another wild one in this rivalry.
Johnson Creek drew first blood in a matchup of 6-0 teams fighting for first place in the Southern Trailways Conference, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning.
Deerfield hit back, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first. The Bluejays came back with two to tie in the top of the second, but Deerfield pulled away from there for a 12-7 victory on Monday.
“We got into a slugfest, and the strike zone got real small,” Johnson Creek baseball coach George Sabol said.
“We walked five and hit five, and we pitched from behind all night. We outhit them, but you've got to serve it up when you get behind in the count. We were up 4-0 and let them off the hook.”
Senior ace Jacob Oestreicher self-destructed with two outs in the bottom of the first, walking two batters and hitting two batters before serving up a grand slam to Deerfield's No. 8 hitter Trey Borgrud.
Oestreicher lasted just 2 1/3 innings, allowing nine runs on seven hits with three strikeouts, three walks and two hit batsmen.
Alan Mares pitched 2 2/3 innings in relief, allowing two runs on two hits with three strikeouts and three hit batsmen. Jordan Frey pitched the final inning, allowing one run on two hits with one strikeout and no walks.
Deerfield, ranked sixth in Division 3, improved to 7-0 and 4-0 in conference. Johnson Creek, ranked fourth in Division 4, dropped to 6-1 and 3-1 in conference.
Tyler Frey had three hits and Jordan Frey had two doubles and three RBIs to lead Johnson Creek's 12-hit attack, but it wasn't enough.
“These were two good hitting teams, but they had timely hits and we didn't,” Sabol said. “It came down to pitching. When you hit five and walk five and don't get the timely hits, it's not going to be pretty.”
Johnson Creek hosts Rio in another Southern Trailways Conference game today.

LAKE MILLS - Freshman Cody Soukup picked up a victory in his first varsity start, leading Lakeside Lutheran to a 10-5 victory over St. John's Military Academy in a nonconference prep baseball game Monday.
Soukup threw six strong innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits and three walks while striking out four. Casey Schlagel allowed a run in the seventh to close it out for the Warriors.
“Soukup did a nice job in his first start as a varsity pitcher,” Lakeside coach Jerry Hahn said. “Hopefully this will give him some confidence and he can help us down the road.”
The Warriors built a 10-2 lead after four innings. Already up 1-0, the Warriors (4-3 overall) scored four times in the second.
With one out, Sam Snyder singled and Steve Pelischek walked. Billy Luetzow singled to score Snyder with Pelischek moving to third. Luetzow advanced to second on the throw to the plate. David Hermanny followed with a single to score Pelischek and Luetzow and it was 4-0.
Leading 5-2, Lakeside put it away with five in the fourth inning, all after two were out.
Schlagel walked and scored on a double to right center by Justin Eternick. Eternick would advance to third on a balk and score on a passed ball. Chris Marks and Kasey Kress walked and Soukup singled to load the bases. A single by Sam Snyder scored Marks and Kress. Randy Wagie singled to center scoring courtesy runner John Alberts and it was 10-2.
“We hit the ball well to jump out to a 10-2 lead, but then our bats were quiet,” Hahn said. “Sam Snyder had a nice game with three hits from the number eight batting slot with three RBIs. Justin Eternick continues to hit the ball with two hits.”
Lakeside travels to Lodi today.
