Margaret Jones, 21, a 2002 graduate of Watertown High School, will be performing volunteer service work for three months in Wittenberg, Germany, at the Wittenberg Center, a ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
She will be commissioned Sunday at 8 a.m. by her home church Immanuel Lutheran, 204 N. Tenth St. The public is invited to attend.
A recent graduate of Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, Jones majored in German and graduated magna cum laude. She wanted to do something that combined her language skills as well as her desire to do mission work.
“I was looking for a church-related service opportunity overseas,” Jones said. “The Wittenberg Center offers the unique chance to combine that with the German language.”
Her responsibilities will include performing “quite a bit of office work and help securing co-ops abroad for Gustavus Adolphus College, a Lutheran college in Minnesota,” Jones said.
Jones is the daughter of Neale and Ruth Jones of Richwood.
“Thanks to my church community and to the ELCA. It's a really special opportunity,” Jones said.
